My name is Roger Darkesworde...

... and I’m a PC in a Dungeons and Dragons game. I wasn’t always; for most of my life I was a free man. Now I don't know how much longer I'll live with this madman controlling me. I'm assembling my journal entries so there's some record of my life and death. If anyone finds this please get it back to my parents in Farmington.

Mom, Dad, I’m sorry I never came back.

Contest! (sort of...)

Well, as far as I can tell I might actually have four or five regular visitors to the site, which makes this the most popular thing I've ever written! Four (or five) might not seem like a lot, but it's fun to write for you guys and especially to get comments. So here is a little contest for all four (or five) of you, and the 60+ individuals who have visited in the past month, and anyone & everyone else who happens to stop by.

What are the races, classes, and levels of the four main characters in RogerDS?

That's right, we'll leave Junior out of this one. Roger, Gunth, Tallow and Grens - do you have the D&D nerdery to guess the crunch behind the fluff? Post your guesses in the comments and feel free to debate and/or mock each other. The contest will run until the next regular entry (hopefully Monday!) or until one or more people guess the correct answer, whichever takes longer.

All the clues necessary can be gleaned from previous journal entries, and I am completely susceptible to bribery. I couldn't think of a bona fide prize (I mean, it's not like we have merchandise or anything) so the winner will be featured as an NPC in an upcoming RogerDS episode! You can even choose which side you are on! Good luck everyone, and here is your one and only hint: everything in the RogerDS party is Core 3.5 D&D, with the exception of a single house rule. Figure it out, I dare you!

Eeeewww, that is going to be tough. The last time I even played D&D we were using the first edition. Yikes!

Even worse, with the T-Rex at the end of this section, I started having flashbacks to "The Isle of Dread" module. And that was using the Basic and Expert set rules. I am old =(

I'll have to badger the guy I share books with into letting me have them for a couple days so I can do some serious clue searching. I don't think race and class will be that hard, but level may take a while to figure out.

Hehe good, I was worried this would be easier than I thought. Glad to hear it's a real challenge!

Mark, I am going to have to find a copy of that module now and check it out. Anything with a plot that boils down to "heroes minus guns plus dinosaurs" is okay by me.

:)

Roger: human fighter, Gunth: human Barbarian, Tallow: halfling Rogue, and im thinking that Grens is a human necromancer, or maybe an evil cleric of some kind.....as for levels....im at a loss

Hey Bob, you are off to a good start. About 50% right so far!

Anybody gonna help him finish this off?

Mark Martin said...

Well, I agree mostly with Bob

Roger: Human Fighter
Gunther: Human Fighter, I would have thought barbarian too, except he hates the outdoors (according to the first few chapters) and I would think a barbarian would love the outdoors. That kind of rules out Ranger too.
Tallow: Halfling Rogue
Grens: Human Wizard/Necromancer

As far as levels are concerned, the only one I can narrow down is that Grens has to be at least 7th level so he can cast the 4th level spell Animate Dead as a Wizard with Necromancy specialty.

That's all I've got!

Whoa Mark, you sure pick up 3.5e rules quick! :)

I'll clarify something which might make this easier (or at least narrow down your options a bit): there is no core necromancer class in 3.5. Necromancers are either wizards, sorcerers, or clerics. (I'm sure there are a variety of necromancer classes in the splatbooks, but remember your one hint: everything is core 3.5 except for a single house rule).

You guys are cracking the riddle!

Mark Martin said...

Right! I had to go online and fine a set of the rules to figure that out!

For the necromancer part, that is why I said "Wizard with Necromancy specialty" and not Necromancer =)

I guess Gunth has the Duel Wield feat but other than that I couldn't see anything.

Did you get a chance to check out the Isle of Dread yet? I have an old copy of it at home I might have to go back and read!

Keep up the good writing

Finally getting back to this...

Yes, I did read the Isle of Dread link you posted. It sounds awesome! As you can probably tell I'm a fan of wilderness exploration as much as or more than dungeons. If I ever have time, maybe I'll track down a copy and convert it to 3.5e.

Also, I assume you mean Roger is the one dual-wielding, not Gunther.

By the way guys, I put a new contest post at the top of the page so you don't have to keep scrolling down here...

Halo Roger!
just discovered your blog (through your signature on order of the stick) and wanted to thank you for your good work! Please keep the writing up and be sure to have one regular visitor more!

Now on to my guess:

Roger: Human Fighter Lawful Good
Gunther: Human Fighter Chaotic Good
Tallow: Halfling Rogue True Neutral
Grens: Human Cleric Lawful neutral

I am pretty sure everyone is lvl 1,
it could be two but then the players in the background would have surely commented,
besides Grens seems to be able to control only 1 HD of undead - just right for lvl 1 cleric.
As his deity of choice - my bet is Wee Jaas, since (if he is human) 3 spells is just about right for 1 lvl and Wee Jas gives her lawful neutral clerics the ability to rebuke/command undead and still channeling positive energy if they so chose - spontaneous cure spells possible.
Thank you and keep up the good work.
